The universe’s expansion is nearing its inevitable end and everything is being devoured by entropy. The key to having a future is a missing energy source, a legendary metaphysical being known only through ancient tales. The last hope of a dying universe is to awaken this dormant Seeker who possesses the capacity to link the entire universe in thought and deed. He alone may be able to rekindle the sparks of a new universal cycle. The remaining advanced species desperately want existence to continue, and send for missions to search for the Seeker. One such mission unexpectedly and inexplicably materializes on a primitive world that is inhabited by the Labateen, a Stone-Age warrior culture. Here they encounter Kara, an outcast Labateen noble woman and fierce warrior. Kara knows details about the Seeker’s litany that go well beyond coincidence, although to Kara they are simply the ways of God. Is Kara the key to locating the long lost Seeker? And what of the races who believe that existence should end in an entropic whimper and who will not sit by while others attempt to alter the end of the universe. Lofty ideals give way to brutal pragmatism as a confederation of races struggles to survive and save existence. Child of Destiny is Book 1 of The Genesis Continuum trilogy. Book 2, Pursing a Legend, and Book 3, Forging a Future, are now available.

I didn't quite read this in one sitting. I came up for air at 48%. Be warned, though: this is one of those books that you won't put down until it's all gone. In fact, that's the only downside. This book is only the first in a series, and now we have to wait for the next one!

The story is full of action, and the fight scenes are particularly well-done. I might be a little biased because the warrior is a woman. Not really a "chick" either, but a healthy, athletic woman who seems like she really could take down prey--and enemies--with nothing more than a knife, spear, and her own two hands. Well, those and the war cries, which are described in a way that makes you think they could scare a victim to death. This book just cries out for movie-making, if only to see and hear how it all really is! The second main character is also a woman, and also a warrior, though she's still clinging to the "no killing" rules of her culture. We can already see where that is heading.

Which brings me to the favorite thing about the book: plenty of deep philosophical questions, cross-cultural irony, and a healthy dose of metaphysics. The fast pace of the action doesn't leave a whole lot of time for contemplation, but plenty to get curious about: time-travel, entropy, and some kind of weapon that knocks out a star with light blasts. It's the sort of science fiction that offers a new way to look at topics that are still unexplained, and provides a really entertaining story line to do it.

Child of Destiny The Genesis Continuum Book 1 Dr George H Elder Books Reviews

I have just finished the second book in this trilogy and I have at least one complaint for the author. You have been watching too many shows on television because the book is supposed to go to a conclusion. Instead it stops at someplace where it forces you to read the other two books in order to find the ending. Other than that I find the book enthralling. I bought the second book just because I needed to know what would happen to Kara. She is the leading character within the book and a girl I would love to know better. I cannot imagine someone who supposed to be a savage, has been so abused and still has the loyalty she seems to have to her tribe, her crew, and the rest of her friends in general. I must admit it would be very very hard to know this young lady for one false step could lead to a hospital admission! On the other hand, once you've gained her loyalty it seems you can do very little to destroy it. Her shipmates seem to share the same sort of convictions. In their own ways. So far even the computer seems to learn that cohesiveness in a crew is important. Her captain, an , appears to be a young girl at heart, and the only male who is both smaller and "more civilized" than the other two comes over is nearer to a "human" than the others. The four of them, and I am including the computer because he to exhibits tendencies we usually ascribe to a human, survive adventures most could find attributable only to a tale of King Arthur's knights. The author makes it believable and entertaining enough to hold your attention while the main characters thread their way through a solution that only he knows at this point. I am waiting impatiently for the third book to come out, just so I can find out how this exciting and interesting tale plays out. Do these four save the universe? Do they stay together, or go their separate ways? If so, is it with fond memories or regrets and what happens to Central Command's dwindling fleet and with it the Federation of planets and civilizations it's held together for so long. At this point I am tempted to repeat a phrase often heard in my childhood. Stay tuned for more adventures next week on ?????. But this doesn't work, so all I can say is that if you want a couple of evenings of real enjoyment, READ THE BOOKS.
This is a really good story that is set close to the end of the universe! Kara is the main character, and she has had a difficult life. Her father and tribe rejected her, and she has to live alone in a cave. The reason for her rejection is a birthmark, and I sympathized with the unfairness and cruelty of her exile. She goes hunting and discovers a space capsule with Anita, Ral, and Ezra inside. They have been stranded on Kara's world, and she thinks they are enemies. Kara attacks but the capsule has a stun machine that knocks her out. Anita teaches Kara her language by the use of a special machine that changes her memories. Kara attacks Anita, but Anita is huge and easily defeats Kara. Ezra is weak but he can read minds. Ral is part of the ship's computer, and he can be nasty at times. These people are looking for a supreme being to help restart the universe, but he is lost. He is also evil but there is no other way to save the universe from ending unless he is found. Anita and the rest hope Kara has information about where they are and she does.

Kara's tribe attacks the capsule and it leaves her world and lands on an ice planet. Things get nasty there because the ship is attacked by some people who want the universe to end. Kara is a wild woman and goes after two men with a knife and axe. She kills them both and this upsets Anita. Anita tries to commit suicide by sitting outside in the cold, but Kara tells her that she is not responsible for the choices Kara made when killing the enemy soldiers. This is a very powerful part of the book and it is where Anita learns that Kara feels cursed by God. Kara and her friends then learn that attacks are underway against several Confederation worlds.

They decide to jump back in time and go to a planet called Caloni. However, jumping back in time makes everyone sick and especially Ezra. Caloni is the only place that can heal him and that is where they go. Kara meets a child named Krista and she looks at her as the daughter she never had. There is an awesome battle on Caloni when the people who want the universe to end attack the planet. Even Anita gets involved. This is an exciting part of the book and it had me glued to the pages! And just when you think Kara and her friends have won, this race called the Alcara attack. They send light beams into Caloni's sun and the capsule escapes. This is very sad because Kara has to leave Krista behind. I am anxious to learn what happens to her, but I think this will be covered in the next book in the series. This book is a real page-turner!
